On Tuesday, September 15, 2009, Secretary Arne Duncan announced that Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2009 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. OLF was honored at a formal ceremony in Washington D.C. on November 2 – 3, 2009. Eligibility Requirements for Blue Ribbon Schools

Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

The U.S. Department of Education’s No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools Program, originally instituted in 1982, requires schools to meet either of two assessment criteria. It recognizes schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance and schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments.

Blue Ribbon Nomination Process

A total of 413 schools nationwide can be nominated. This number is determined based on the number of K-12 students and schools in each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The Chief State School Officer (CSSO) nominates public schools, and the Council for American Private Education (CAPE) submits nominations it selects from private schools. The selected schools are invited by Secretary Duncan to submit an application for possible recognition as a No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon School.

Our Lady of Fatima School was one of only 50 private schools in the entire United States to be honored with the NCLB Blue Ribbon School of Excellence designation.  OLF serves a a student population ranging from pre-school 3 and 4 year olds to 8th graders.
